Colchester Allotment Developments in Lockdown

Colchester Allotment has been placed in isolation as part of the government’s health guidelines, however Jim our Lead Volunteer Coordinator has been allowed to continue, in order to maintain the fantastic work that the team are doing.

It was a couple of weeks ago that the decision was announced and thankfully our team was working at the time of the announcement. We were able to agree what vegetables needed to be planted and two people took seeds to plant at home. It was decided to plant as many seedlings as possible to “see what happens”

Most of the plots had already been prepared and so it is a matter of transplanting seedlings and planting potatoes. In effect I have a blank canvas and will be taking guidance remotely from the team.

The first task was to start planting some of the cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli. This is an experiment to see if we are going to have a milder start to this year. We have plenty of seedlings available if we are caught out by Jack Frost.

Here is the plot with broccoli and cauliflower with sheepskin covers to help prevent root fly.
